AI in Practice

Startups in the AI era

Business

A founder and a small robot set up a new shop in minutes, on a street crowded with similar shops built by robots; far away, customers gather around one distinctive shop.

Four changes happening now

  • Changes happening now
  • The near future
  1. Everyone uses AI

These days everyone uses AI, and everyone thinks they use it best. Using AI alone no longer sets you apart.

    uses AI
  2. Building software costs almost nothing

No one writes 100% of their with their own mind and hands anymore. Web, app and game development has become more advanced, much faster and much easier. The place for developers who relied only on writing code is disappearing.

  3. Start a business alone, fast

In Seoul, I asked AI and applied for business registration online in 20 minutes; it was done the next day. You could probably do it in 10 minutes. From building the idea to registration and marketing, you can do it alone with AI, without anyone's help.

  4. Reaching customers is harder

As starting a business got easier, far more people are doing it. In the US, solo businesses earning over $1 million a year doubled from 2023 to 2025, and new business applications in the information industry rose about 45% in a year. Someone is probably already running the business you just thought of. Finding people who will buy is far harder than building.

  5. Jensen Huang: “Everybody will become an AI company”

At the World Government Summit in Dubai in February 2024, CEO Jensen Huang said that thanks to AI anyone can now be a programmer, so we should stop telling children they must learn to code. Today you no longer need to learn a or : you tell AI what you want in plain words and it writes the code. His words came true. Then on 21 October 2026, in his keynote at NVIDIA GTC Berlin 2026, he said:

There’s no question everybody will become an AI company.

In the near future, everyone will start a business. Like freelancers, people will easily set up and run their own companies with AI, even alone. With that many founders, finding people who will buy comes first more than ever.

  6. What decides success or failure?

Is it your ability, the AI's ability, or your business strategy? The of starting a business has changed a lot over the years, but there was always a clear pattern. In the AI era that pattern has completely disappeared, and it is time to find a new one.

What you need to succeed in business in the AI era

Seen the other way round, what everyone has (AI, development, registration) makes no difference. The difference comes from these four things.

  1. An eye for choosing, not just the power to build

Since you can build anything, the first is choosing a problem people truly want solved, even if they have to pay.

    Why
    • Building software costs almost nothing
  2. Customers before building

Customers are hard to reach. Find buyers before you build, and grow a direct line to them (community, subscribers, regulars) as your asset.

    Why
    • Reaching customers is harder
  3. A reason to choose you

The same idea already exists. Use what AI cannot copy, such as your experience, expertise, trust and story, to give people a reason to buy from you.

    Why
    • Everyone uses AI
    • Reaching customers is harder
  4. Launch small, fix fast

Building costs almost nothing, so launch small instead of perfect, watch how the market reacts, and adjust quickly until you find what makes money.
